Akaso is the brainchild of founder Philippe Vertriest, father of two daughters with Ethiopian roots and a strong supporter of Africa’s creative talent. From the encounter with the book ‘Painted Bodies. African Body Painting, Tattoos & Scarification’, Philippe developed a vision to invite Africa’s untapped creative talent to be part of a co-creation design label.
Back in 2014 Philippe took two Belgian designers to the Kara tribe where they worked with six young women and men, who according their body painting traditions designed the Akaso prints on their bodies and on paper. Akaso rewards the Kara artists as Western free lance designers, paying them 250 euro for every print.
The entire collection is made in Europe with European eco-friendly fabrics, and stands out for it’s unique print and pattern techniques.
Akaso is now developing as a full fledged accessories line, based on the founder’s long track record in the accessories industry. The first handbag range celebrates Kara tribe skin scarification culture, for which Akaso developed and patented a unique technique to visualise a three-dimensional print on a souple Italian calf leather.
In November 2017 Akaso opened its first flagship store in the heart of the prestigious Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert in Brussels, and has the ambition to build its distribution around a European own operated retail network.
